    BACKGROUND

CASAP arises from the need to have a scientific space to socialize the results of researches focused on air quality and public health, and in turn generate initiatives that lead to an improvement of environmental quality.

The first version of CASAP was held in 2007 in the city of Manizales, Colombia, led by the National University. In this first version (I CASAP), a space of discussion on “quality of diesel" was organized where a national fuel and fuels improvement program was discussed with the presence of national and international experts and representatives of governments. All contributions of this initiative were fundamental in the later expedition of the law number 1205/2008 from the Colombian Congress which forced to reduce the amount of sulfur in the diesel destined to the public transport. As a consequence of this regulation, currently Colombia consumes a diesel with a sulfur content of 50 ppm compared to the 2500 ppm that were supplied in 2008.

The second (II CASAP) and third (III CASAP) events were carried out in 2009 and 2011, in Cartagena and Medellin cities respectively, led by the University of the Andes and by the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Aburrá (AMBA); both were successful events where, in general, an important space was opened to reflect on sustainable mobility in urban centers, the use of biofuels and the increasing environmental impacts.

The fourth (IV CASAP) version coordinated by University of La Salle developed in Bogota city during 2013, presented an important international participation as well as a strong presence of national participants, which shows the existing interest in the problem of air pollution not only at the national level, but at the international level. The topics of greatest impact addressed at the congress were in their order, sampling and analysis of air pollutants, air quality and public health, air quality management, public policies, urban planning, climate change, energy efficiency, biofuels and meteorological modeling.

The fifth (V CASAP) version was held in 2015 in the Bucaramanga city, Colombia, led by the Pontifical Bolivarian University. The main theme addressed on this occasion was modeling of air quality, from which results are contributing greatly in air quality research and applied standards.

    OBJECTIVES

    • To provide an academic space to expose scientific research under themes of air quality and public health that are being developed in the country and abroad.

    • To generate a space for universities, research centers and members of the community, to socialize and publicize results of their research and experiences, which allow to become scientific and technical basis for the development of new projects, as well as to encourage improvement of public policies by environmental and public health authorities.

    • To sensitize and educate society in its importance as the main promoter of public policies that allow mitigation the negative effects of air pollution.

    TOPICS

    1. Links between urban transport and air quality: challenges to reduce pollution.

    2. Effects of air pollution in health and in the environment.

    3. Influences of alternative energies on air quality and climate change.

    4. Connections between air pollution and climate change.

    5. Management of air pollution: prevention policies, technological breakthroughs.

    6. Atmospheric physicochemistry: local, regional and global impacts.

    7. Modeling of air pollutants dynamics.

    8. Emission inventories.

    9. Air quality monitoring: devices and remote sensors.

    10. Risk assessment
